Solar Eclipse! Jesus is Coming!

Scripture: 2 Peter 3:13-18
I’m amazed at the attention the solar Eclipse had yesterday. So many people posted about it. Many people took off work to see it. Some drove many miles to experience the total effect. They even sold special glasses so you could see it. Our country was consumed with looking into the heavens.
The Bible does have a lot to say about heavenly bodies doing things during the last days of earth. Peter says that we should look forward to the new heaven and the new earth, just as Jesus promised! There will be a day when the world is completely filled with God’s righteousness. This is truly something to look forward to!
But this reality is not today. It’s coming in the future. So, what are we to be doing in the mean time? Should we buy “solar glasses” and wait for the new heaven and new earth? Peter tells us what we should be doing. He says, “as you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight” (v. 14). Live in peace. Live pure. Live right.
As you live this way, realize that you are a witness to other people. God has given you a mission to reach others with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The longer God waits to return, the more time people have to be saved! We need to make the most of our time here. Nobody knows when Jesus will return. It could be at any moment. Christians, let’s not waste another minute! God is giving us this time to live right and to see others come to faith in Jesus Christ.
Of course, people will write detailed reasons why God sent this solar eclipse to appear over certain parts of the country. Of course, people will wonder what message God is trying to send. But let’s not get carried away by strange teachings, rather, you must grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (v. 18).
Don’t get caught up in all the details about what this “possible end times sign” might be. Take the time God has given you to grow, to live right, and lead others to faith in Jesus Christ.
