Saturday was our second baby shower. Because Alisha is from Pittsburgh we had one there a couple weeks ago, and yesterday we had another one with people where we live now. Alisha’s Mom went all out on the decorations. We had an incredible team put everything together and set everything up. I spent a lot of time making invitations, game sheets, and game videos. So much effort, energy, time, and money were put into these baby shower events.
The first shower was awesome. I walked into an already decorated facility and it took my breath away. It was beautiful! The second shower was just as good, except I helped put up the decorations this time and knew what to expect. It all was really good, but it didn’t take my breath away. Because I helped serve on the team, I had the pleasure of seeing everyone’s reactions when they walked into the room.
What if we wanted to have a third baby shower? Who would we invite? We have all the supplies. We have all the decorations. We know the games. We all have our part that we are serving to get it all ready. We know the program. We know the seating arrangement. We know the guest list.
But would a 3rd baby shower with the same guests from the 1st and 2nd shower be as fun? Would we have the same excitement while we were preparing and getting ready? Would we be as careful to put up all the decorations just right, and run the program just right? Would we bother to send invitations again or would we just let everyone know at the shower when the next one was?
You can’t run the same party over and over again for the same people. You need to invite new people to keep the vision going.
…I think the same goes for church.
